WHAT IS BookCrossing?
BookCrossing is an exercise in the ways of serendipity. It examines how all things are connected to all other things. It beautifully illustrates the “Butterfly Wings” effect that a simple action can have. And for the scientifically minded it is an excellent chance to study the epidemiology of a “reading infection”. Oh, and it is also a fun, absolutely free, and private, book tracking website for booklovers EVERYWHERE, Instead of letting your books take up room collecting dust on your bookshelf, you can release, reduce and recycle them.
The bookcrossing.com website lets you follow the progress of your books as they move through their lives in the wild.
www.bookcrossing.com
How does it work?
After you join your fellow booklovers at www.bookcrossing.com you can register your books on the website. Registration statuses include: TBR (To Be Read), Available, Reserved, Permanent Collection and Traveling. Register as many or as few books as you want. Each book will be assigned a unique BCID (BookCrossing ID) number. This will associate the book with you and allow you to track its adventures “in the wild”.
Label the book as simply or as ornamentally as you desire, but at the very least, write the website and the BCID in the book. When you are finished with the book either pass it on to a friend, a fellow bookcrosser or leave it somewhere for others to find. Enter release notes on books left in public and other bookcrossers will be able to “go hunting”. You will be notified by e-mail each time someone goes to the website and does a journal entry on the book.
Worried about privacy?
BookCrossing will NEVER sell your information to anyone. When you join you pick a screen name to be known by so no one knows your name. All communications with other members can be done through the website without anyone seeing your e-mail address. Granted, many bookcrossers form special relationships with each other but what or how much you reveal is strictly up to you. When another bookcrosser PM’s (private messages) you, there is no obligation to respond. How involved you become is a matter of person preference.
Speaking of which… Suppose I have no desire to join but have found a labeled book.
No problem! It is not necessary to be a member to make a journal entry on a found book. Just go to the website and enter the BCID. The person who released the book will be forever in your debt. OK, I’ve joined, registered some books, even released a few. I’m having a great time but, Is that all there is?
NO, no no of course not! The website literally brims with things to do.
There are many searchable elements on the site. Search for books, authors, members and much more. Arrange to get release alerts for cities near you so you will know when any books are being turned loose. Buy or download release supplies. Which reminds me…. Bookcrossing is an entirely free website but it does cost a lot to maintain. There are many items available for purchase at the Supply Store. Each purchase helps support the site.
And then there is FORUM.
The forum area of the website offers a chat room subject for most everybody. You are sure to find some subject of interest. And you can also join the Bookcrossing Discussion Group if you prefer an e-mail forum. Related Websites:
There are links on the main site for some related and favorite sites, such as meetup.com that coordinates meetings for bookcrossers.
http://cliff1976.com/ (under Projects) is the site for the popular Wishlist.
www.bookrelay.com is an addiction all of its own, don’t miss it.
Find a local OBCZ (Official BookCrossing Zone) by going to http: //homepage.mac.com/pachydomo/usa.htm

Antof9
Antof9 wrote this wonderful note to explain the basics of bookcrossing trades to newbies, who don't quite have the hang of trade etiquette yet. As you can see, some of it is personalized to fit a particular situation. I left it in order to give you an idea for adapting your own version. Thanks to Antof9 for easing a difficult chore for us!

Subject Line: Welcome to BookCrossing.
Welcome to the adventure that is BookCrossing! BC means different thingsto different people -- for some it's wild releasing, for some it's playing on the forums, for some it's trading, and for others it's about finding new books and authors to read. For some, it's a combination of all those things! You can often figure out "what BC means to me" by checking out a BCer's profile. If they are a big trader, they'll say so, or if they can only ship within their own country (by choice or because of monetary reasons), they'll say that too.
However, most of us don't prefer that other members go "shopping" from our bookshelves. That is, to send a PM to someone out of the blue, with whom you've had no previous contact, asking for some of their books. It's true that there are a few people who have notes on their profiles stating "if you see something you'd like, just ask!", but unfortunately that's not the norm, nor is it me.
Since you're new, I thought it would help to explain some of this, rather than just ignoring your PM. If the people who have been around a while don't explain these things to the newbies, how will they ever know? :)
Anyway, it's generally considered good form (if you're actually asking for a book) to offer something on your own shelf in trade, or to offer to pay postage (especially if it's outside your own country), or something. By asking that way, many BCers often just send you the book(s) with no strings attached, appreciating that you've offered something in return.
So now we come to your actual request (and if you've read this far, good for you!). You asked for 3 books on my shelf, but only one of them was even set as "available". And I'm very sorry to say that it's not even available, as I'm holding it for Secretariat's March Release Challenge (and yes, I updated that this morning to eliminate any confusion). The other 2 books are set as TBR. Meaning they are "to be read". I don't know if you read the journal entries on Coyote Blue or not, but it was actually an "award" for a release challenge, so I'm really not willing to give that up before reading. And of course, until I read it, I won't know if it's something I want to hang on to or release. Cancer, Schmancer will probably be a one-time read and then on to someone else.
So here's my "welcome to BCing" proposal: I'll move Coyote Blue and Cancer, Schmancer up to the top of my TBR, and I'll put a sticky note inside the covers of each that you're interested in them. When I finish them, if I'm not going to PC them, I'll PM you for your addy. Here's your part of the deal: go to Cliff's wishlist site and find two other BCers to send books to. They can be in-country or out of country, but it would be nice if you RABCKed (Random Act of BookCrossing Kindness) them from their wishlists. Kind of the whole "pay it forward" thing. If that sounds like a deal, I'll read those two as quickly as possible and contactyou shortly!
Last -- I hope this didn't sound like a reprimand or like I was being snotty. I have so enjoyed the BC experience, and want others to feel the same. I hope this helps you understand what's considered "normal" around here, and doesn't in any way turn you off of BC!
Please let me know if you have any questions about this message or BookCrossing in general. I'd love to try to answer them!
